Title of Lesson: Measures of Central Tendency
Date of Lesson Submission: March, 2008Mentor and/or Team Teacher:
Greg SawatzkySchool: Landmark CollegiateSubject Area(s): Math
Grade Level(s)/Course: Grade 7Materials/Resources Required (including ICT)
Data Projector, Computers, Excel Program
Lesson Objective/s
(What will students be expected to learn, demonstrate, and what performance standards are expected of them?)
7.1 SP Demonstrate an Understanding of Central Tendency and Range
7.2 SP Determine the effect on the Mean, Median and Mode when an Outlier is included in a data set
ICT Integration and Infusion Objective/s
(How will ICT be integrated into the various parts of this lesson?)
Using Excel to Apply concepts of Measures of Central Tendency
Lesson Plan Details
(Provide information below under then following headings use as much space as required)
Activate:
Have students become familiar with the key terms used in this Strand. There are a variety of activities that do this. See John Van de Walles book Teaching Student-Centered Mathematics Grade 5 8 pages 308 320 for ideas on developing the concept of these terms.
1. Analyzing Data Sets
Van De Walle 5-8 (p. 312) Activity 11.1
Analyze 4 sets of Data with given measures of Central Tendency
See Attached BLM
Students make conjectures about meaning of Measures of Central Tendency
2. Vocabulary Match up
Measures of Central TendencyMeanMedianModeRangeAverageData SetOutlierNumerical OrderAscending OrderDescending OrderPlace Terms and Definitions in an envelope and have groups match key vocabulary words with definitions. See Attached BLM
Place vocabulary in two groups one for your confident choices and ones you are not sure about.
Have students circle around the room and visit other groups and allow for corrections.
Follow up with short discussion. And clear up misunderstandings
Vocabulary Strategies
3 point vocabulary page
Journal which are easy definitions which are harder definition to remember
Acquire:
There are a variety of activities that do this. See John Van de Walles book Teaching Student-Centered Mathematics Grade 5 8 pages 308 320 for ideas on developing the concept of these terms.
1. Developing concept of mean Leveling of Bars
Van de Walle 5-8 (Page 313) Activity 11.2
Students make bar graphs with centi cubes (1 cube = $1.00) to demo price of each of 6 toys; Football (8$), Doll ($12), Jump Rope ($3), Car ($5), Game ($7), Hacky Sack ($1). Create a bar graph of the 6 prices
Students then make all bars the same height showing what price would be if all toys would be the same Draw a line on first graph along the $6.00 price what is noticed? (same number of cubes above as missing below)
Develops idea that Mean (average) means if all were the same
2. Developing concept of mean Balancing Point
Van de Walle 5-8 (Page 316) Activity 11.5
Students create a number line from 0 12 (every 2 cm)
Place a centi cube for the price of each toy on the line
Move cubes toward the center keeping line balanced e.g. move one right (high price) for every move left (low price).
Extension notice that as the cubes are moved there are new prices meaning the same mean can have a variety of different numbers.
3. Provide opportunities to find the Median for odd and even set of data.
Apply:
1. Analyzing Measures of Central Tendency and Range Using Excel
Analyze two golf scores (Mathpower 8 Page 333) A coach wanted to use a 9 hole golf game to decide who should make the golf team. The score card shows the result.
Player123456789TotalAverageMedianModeHighLowRangeCarla643776346Joe4434155436
Have students create a spreadsheet for the scores above.
Demonstrate Excel features like
Auto Fill
Formatting, Decimal
Formula
Typing in formulas
Autosum
Average
Median
Mode
Max
Min
Typing in formulas for Range (=Max-Min)
Discuss findings
Analyze the data to discuss who should make the golf team
Eventually the discussion will be about the Outlier and its effect.- Predict which measures of Cental Tendencies would change the most. The least. Change the 15 to a lower score like 4 or 3. What happens?
2. Assessment
Create a spreadsheet with ten test scores that have an average of 70%, Mode of 65% and a range of 40%. (check to make sure students use the formula tool to find their Mean, Median, etc.
Format the spreadsheet
Written assignment: What strategy did you use in choosing your numbers? How did you choose which numbers to alter?
Extension. With a variety of different answers the Median may differ. What is the highest median you can create? What strategy did you use?
